Sistas’ Place, 456 Nostrand Avenue, at the corner of Jefferson Avenue, where Jazz: A Music of the Spirit Lives and Culture is our Weapon, continues it’s 20th Historic Landmark Season. Saturday, February 13, 2016 we present the second of a series of African American History Month Celebrations of the art form with educator/bandleader/saxophonist T. K. Blue along with vocalist Fay Victor, pianist Sharp Radway, bassist Hill Greene and drummer Dwayne “Cook” Broadnax in a tribute to the great Jimmy Scott.
Jimmy Scott, born July 17,1925, a year before Carter G. Woodson created the first so-called Negro History Week Celebration, is, I’m sure, exactly what Mr. Woodson had in mind when he proactively set aside this time so our contributions to the world could be acknowledged. Jimmy Scott was a great vocalist who fortunately lived 88 years on this planet and who did create a body of work that the group led by T. K. Blue can access.
Mr. Scott, however, lived many of those years in obscurity. It wasn’t until the latter part of his life that he received the recognition he so richly deserved and our great fortune is that bassist Hillard Greene, who was the music director for the last 20 years of Mr. Scott’s life, is a member of TK’s band. Jimmy Scott’s voice and style has often been compared to that of Billie Holiday’s so it should come as no surprise that Fay Victor will be singing. It will be your loss if you don’t make this event because T. K. Blue always comes to play and this is an extraordinary band.
Don’t Miss This!!
