Sistas’ Place, 456 Nostrand Avenue, at the corner of Jefferson Avenue, where Jazz: A Music of the Spirit Lives and Culture is our Weapon, presents a very special, one time only performance, of Brooklyn’s own Kenny Gates with his “Real Deal” Quartet in a Tribute to trumpeter/educator Cyril Greene, Saturday, August 13th at 9 and 10:30pm. The Kenny Gates Quartet features the leader on piano and vocals, saxophonist James Stewart, bassist Belvin Bullock and drummer Joe Brown.
This concert will be a tribute to one of Kenny Gates’ high school friends Cyril Greene, who was also an incredible musician and educator. Cyril Greene left the planet two months ago and this concert will be an effort to celebrate him at the venue he performed at several times over the years. Graduates of Brooklyn’s Boys High School in the 1960s, Cyril and Kenny have maintained their friendship over the years. During the last set, musicians who knew Cyril will be invited to come and express their feeling about his loss.
