On Saturday, November 19th, at 9 and 10:30 pm we continue our 2022-23 season with Vanessa Rubin and her trio featuring pianist Brandon McCune, bassist Kenny Davis, and drummer Winard Harper.

With this all-star cast, you know it’s going to be a hot time! Last Saturday, Vanessa gave those who were present a glimpse of what to expect this week as she sat in with Carla Cook. Rumor has it that Ms. Cook might do likewise this Saturday! Give yourself a pre-Thanksgiving treat!

We have ended our 27th regular season, but we still have summer concerts! We remember the jazz greats for this summer series. On Saturday, July 15th @ 8 pm, we celebrate the late, great Max Roach with the Winard Harper Sextet.

Sistas’ Place, 456 Nostrand Avenue, at the corner of Jefferson Avenue, where Jazz: A Music of the Spirit Lives and Culture is our Weapon, continues its 21st season with the music of Resistance, Resilience, and Resurgence. On Saturday, June 10, 2017, at 9 and 10:30 pm, we kick off our summer program of special performances beginning with Winard Harper and Jeli Posse featuring saxophonist Antonio Hart, trumpeter Ted Chubb, pianist Norman Simmons, bassist Vince Dupont and the leader on drums.

This is certainly a special performance for Mr. Harper who has, in the Art Blakey tradition, most often found young talent to present on his excursions to our venue. However, we will be in for a treat this Saturday because the great pianist Norman Simmons, who has accompanied Betty Carter, Carmen McRae, Joe Williams and Anita O’Day, just to name a few, will be performing along with the younger master of the alto saxophone, Antonio Hart. Given the fact that Winard Harper seems to always take no prisoners when he performs, this should be a special night, indeed. Don’t Miss It!!!

Our 22nd season opens on Saturday, September 23, 2017, with the Chico Freeman Quartet featuring Anthony Wonsey, Kenny Davis and Jerome Jennings playing the music of John Coltrane!

This historic season is about to come to a close and we’re going to end it with two sensational bands. This Saturday we have the fabulous drummer/bandleader Winard Harper with a dynamic band that includes a reunion with Winard and the wonderful trumpeter/flugelhornist Patrick “Face” Rickman. Along with them the band features the saxophonist Elijah Jamal Balbed, pianist Tadataka Uno and bassist Vincent Dupont.

Next week we close out the season and celebrate African Liberation Day with Rene McLean’s Pentagram Music of the Spirit!

Saturday, April 16, 2016 @ 9 & 10:30pm, we begin our Jazz: A Music of the Spirit Festival in association with the CBJC Festival. The group leading off this Festival is one led by vocalist Vanessa Rubin and saxophonist Don Braden with organist Kyle Koehler and drummer Winard Harper.
