On Saturday, December 7th at 9 and 10:30 pm, the Carl Barlett Jr. Quintet will be in residence with trumpeter Charles Bartlett, pianist Julius Chen, bassist Steve Wood and drummer Will Terrill. Saxophonist Carl Bartlett Jr. comes out of a family of excellent musicians as is witnessed by his uncle Charles as his bandmate. On Saturday, November 16th at 9 and 10:30 pm, bassist/guitarist/composer Gerry Eastman leads the Williamsburg Music Center’s All-Stars featuring saxophonist Andrew Schwandt, trumpeter Anthony Hervey, Greg Lewis (aka Organ Monk) and drummer Taru Alexander.

Gerry Eastman founded the Williamsburg Music Center in 1981 and is a founding member of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium. In addition to creating a unique Black-owned institution that provides a venue for other musicians to perform at, he has also created a band of some bright stars in this music. This is the band’s first performance at Sistas’ Place and it promises to be exciting.

On Saturday, November 2nd at 9 and 10:30 pm, multi-percussionist Jerome Jennings will perform with his group of young lions that includes trumpeter Josh Evans, saxophonist Aaron Burnett, trombonist Dion Tucker, pianist Willerm Delisfort and bassist Benjamin Jephta.

Jerome Jennings is a rising star in this music. He has just released his second CD, Solidarity, and this band he put together for his performance at Sistas’ Place promises to be great!

On Saturday, October 19th at 9 and 10:30pm, Ahmed Abdullah’s Diaspora Meet Francisco Mora Catlett’s AfroHORN with saxophonists Sam Newsome and Don Chapman; vocalist and poet Monique Ngozi Nri; pianist Aruan Ortiz; bassist RaDu ben Judah; percussionists Roman Diaz and Reggie Nicholson; multi-percussionist Francisco Mora Catlett; and trumpet, flugelhorn and vocals, Ahmed Abdullah.

Six months ago the bands of Diaspora (Dispersions of the Spirit of Ra) and AfroHORN went into the studio to document the historic pairing of the two groups. The result, Diaspora Meets AfroHORN, Music of the Spirit, Out of Sistas’ Place, will be presented this Saturday. The leaders of the combined ensembles, Ahmed Abdullah and Fransisco Mora Catlett are veterans of the Sun Ra Arkestra and what they have accomplished on this CD is a synergistic musical experience that can best be described as a “happening!”

On Saturday, October 5th at 9 and 10:30 pm, trumpeter, bandleader, composer, educator Kamau Adilifu with pianist Michael Cochrane, bassist Calvin Hill and drummer Darrell Green will perform a Tribute to Sonny Fortune.

The great Sonny Fortune left the planet last year in October. In his lifetime he worked with artists such as Mongo Santamaria, Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Freddie Hubbard, Miles Davis, Nat Adderley, and Buddy Rich. We, at Sistas’ Place, were very fortunate that he was the kind of great artist who believed in giving back to the community he came from. For many years he performed in a variety of settings, sometimes in duo with Rashied Ali, sometimes with his quartet, sometimes with Akua Dixon’s Quartette Indigo, sometimes in a put-together group that included Odean Pope, John Hicks, Reggie Workman, and Rashied Ali. His brilliant contributions over the years, in whatever setting, is in part, what has led to our being a Historic Landmark Institution.

Kamau Adilifu, has also been a great musician for a long time although this is his first performance at Sistas’ Place. He is also a longtime friend of Sonny Fortune’s having played in Mr. Fortune’s first band (circa 1973) and will use a couple of members (Michael Cochrane and Calvin Hill) of Sonny’s last group to pay Tribute.
