On Saturday, December 8, 2018, at 9 and 10: 30 pm, trumpeter Robert Rutledge will lead a band that features saxophonist Gene Ghee, pianist Sharp Radway, bassist Essiet Essiet, and drummer Dave Gibson. Robert Rutledge is a bandleader who chooses challenging material to play and has a band of musicians who are steeped in the culture and who, like himself, consistently deliver the goods. On Saturday, May 7th, at 9 and 10:30 pm, we continue our Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival@Sistas’ Place with the Robert Rutledge/George Gray Ensemble featuring saxophonist Marquis Sayles, pianist Benito Gonzalez, bassist Alex Blake with trumpeter Robert Rutledge and multi-percussionist George Gray. The return of this project is a great thing for the music! This exciting collaboration between Mr. Rutledge and Mr. Gray has produced brilliant concerts in the past and this Saturday should be special because we will also be celebrating Robert Rutledge’s Arrival Day aka Birthday, (May 8)! On Saturday, May 5, 2018, at 9 and 10:30 pm, we continue our Sistas’ Place/Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival with trumpeter/bandleader, Robert Rutledge, leading a very special band featuring saxophonist Gene Ghee, pianist Sharp Radway, bassist Lonnie Plaxico and drummer Dave Gibson. Robert Rutledge comes out of Birmingham, Alabama and he always plays with the spirit, courage and hope that it takes to rise above any forces that think we are less than great.The week following this performance he will be celebrating a Landmark in his life, come celebrate with us…this promises to be another great Saturday night!

On Saturday, May 6th @ 9 and 10:30 pm, we continue the Central Brooklyn Jazz: A Music of the Spirit Festival at Sistas’ Place with the Robert Rutledge Band featuring saxophonist Reggie Woods, pianist Brandon McCune, bassist Alex Blake, multi-percussionist George Gray and the leader on trumpet. Mr. Rutledge always comes ready to bring the fire and with this band, there is no doubt he will.

Sistas’ Place, 456 Nostrand Avenue, at the corner of Jefferson Avenue, where Jazz: A Music of the Spirit Lives and Culture is our Weapon, continues its 21st season with the music of Resistance, Resilience, and Resurgence. On Saturday, May 6th, 2017 at 9 and 10:30pm, trumpeter Robert Rutledge and drummer George Gray will feature the music of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers with saxophonist Roger Byam, pianist Yochi Uzeki, vibraphonist Bryan Carrott and bassist Alex Blake.

This coalition of Robert Rutledge and George Gray bodes well for the future of this music. It is a band that takes on the music of some of the great artists of this Music of the Spirit and makes it compelling, contemporary and lit! This Saturday, they have chosen to take on the music of the artists who contributed to the large repertoire of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. It is also a celebration of Robert Rutledge’s Arrival Day aka Birthday, so, be there, don’t be square!

We call this month-long series Brass Players at Sistas’ Place. The final brass players featured in this festival series is French hornist Vincent Chancey, next week.

On Sunday, February 25th, 2024, Sistas’ Place presents A Jazz Tribute to Sista Viola Plummer. This event is in memory of our Sista Viola and honoring our Brother Ahned Abdullah for the jazz institution they led in building for a quarter century. This event is at Bed-Stuy Restoration Corp. and is $35; cash preferred.

MC Ahmed Abdullah hosts an amazing list of jazz musicians including Reggie Woods, T.K. Blue, Sharp Radway, Patsy Grant, Dwayne Broadmax, Alan Palmer, Venito Gonzalez, George Gray, Gene Ghea, Bill Saxton, Robert Rutledge, Jimmy Owens, Winard Harper, Craig Harris, Danny Mixon, Will Calhoun, Paul Beaudry, Lesedi Ntsane, Steven Kroon, Bryan Carrott, and more (list still in formation).
