On Sunday, August 25th from 5 to 9 pm, Sistas’ Place presents pianist/composer Kenny Gates and Friends in our final show of the 23rd season.

As anyone who has touched a piano knows, it’s easy to sound notes. Therefore it is refreshing to find a pianist who is not in love with notes for their own sake (like some long-winded speaker) and whose interpretive talent befits the magnificence of the instrument. Mr. Gates has an instantly recognizable articulation, and you could swear (as in People Will Say We’re In Love) that he’s talking to you. His fills, as on Pannonica, are not just neighboring scale tones, but parenthetical asides that display a brilliant awareness of the intricacies of bop.

On Saturday, May 4th at 9 and 10:30 pm, the 20th Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival at Sistas’ Place continues with the Frank Lacy Sextet featuring trumpeter/flugelhornist Josh Evans, saxophonist Stacy Dilliard, pianist Jon Elbaz, bassist Radu Ben Judah, and drummer Taru Alexander.

Frank Lacy is one of the geniuses of this music. His work with greats like Art Blakey, Lester Bowie, Slide Hampton, Roy Hargrove, Henry Threadgill, McCoy Tyner, and his longstanding relationship with the Mingus Dynasty, has established him as an artist of world-class status. One of the things to help establish Sistas’ Place, as a Historic Landmark Institution, was the fact that we initiated Conversations, a forum that was geared to educate the African American community to the great artists in our midst. With Mr. Lacy’s initial performance at Sistas’ Place during this Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival, we have decided to re-initiate Conversations with Frank Lacy, which will be between the 1st and 2nd sets!

On Saturday, December 1, 2018, at 9 and 10: 30 pm drummer Taru Alexander will lead a band that pays Tribute to the life of his father, tenor saxophonist Roland Alexander and the recently deceased trumpeter Roy Hargrove, both of whom he worked with. The band will feature alto saxophonist Justin Robinson, trombonist Frank Lacy, pianist Mimiko Watanabe, bassist Radu Ben Judah as well as vocalist Hanka Gregusova. This promises to be a very exciting band with a Tribute to two of this music’s finest, you can’t lose.

On Saturday, November 3, 2018, Ahmed Abdullah’s Diaspora will present a very special evening of inspirational music dedicated to Black Solidarity Day and Get Out the Vote!

The band will feature Ahmed Abdullah on trumpet, flugelhorn and vocals, the great Donald Smith (playing the newly purchased Yamaha baby grand, for the first time) along with Kelvyn Bell on guitar, Don Chapman, tenor sax, Monique Ngozi Nri, poetry and vocals, Radu Ben Judah playing bass and Ronnie Burrage on drums. It is a band that you really don’t want to miss!

Music of the Spirit will sustain you through the challenging times we are experiencing.
