On Saturday, March 7th, at 9 and 10:30 pm, we begin our series celebrating Phenomenal African Sistas’ with cellist/vocalist/bandleader Akua Dixon and guitarist Freddie Bryant, bassist Calvin Jones, and drummer Damon Duewhite.

It’s been a while since Akua Dixon has graced our stage but she returns leading a series that she was destined for. The Phenomenal African Sistas’ series is one in which we honor the great women who are either our ancestors or who are presently living among us. As a composer, cellist, vocalist and bandleader, Akua Dixon is the perfect choice.

On Saturday, February 29th at 9 and 10:30 pm, we conclude our African American History Month celebrations with pianist Bad Alan Palmer and his trio which features bassist Ameen Salim and drummer Taru Alexander.

Alan Palmer, who has that adjective in front of his name because the great Jackie McLean thought it appropriate, performs on a date that only happens every four years. That is totally in keeping with the way he plays which is rare, beautiful and yet totally in keeping with some mystical reality. The musicians he has chosen are top shelf and are going to make this a night to remember.

On Saturday, February 22nd at 9 and 10:30 pm, we continue with our African American History Month celebrations with bassist Kenny Davis who will present a living Tribute to Jimmy Owens.

The musicians Kenny has chosen are trumpeters Jimmy Owens and Eddie Allen, pianist Luciano Minetti, drummer Jarrett Walter and of course, Mr. Davis on bass. This is a very important and beautiful idea of celebrating an artist who has done so much for the Jazz community and one who should be celebrated in the African American community while he is still on the planet!

On Saturday, February 15th at 9 and 10:30 pm, we continue with our African American History Month celebrations with vocalist Dwight West who will present a Valentine Tribute to the great Johnny Hartman. Dwight West’s group includes saxophonist Anthony Nelson, pianist Ava Nelson, bassist Calvin Jones, and drummer Joe Brown.

Johnny Hartman is a legendary vocalist who has the distinction of being the only vocalist John Coltrane chose to record with him on their classic 1963 collaboration. Born in Louisiana but raised in Chicago, Mr. Hartman was one of the many great musicians taught by Captain Walter Dyett at DuSable High School. Other notable musicians who attended Chicago’s DuSable and were students of Captain Dyett include vocalists Dinah Washington and Nat King Cole, saxophonists Gene Ammons, Johnny Griffin, John Gilmore, Red Holloway, Von Freeman, Joseph Jarman, and Eddie Harris, bassists Wilbur Ware, Richard Davis and Ronnie Boykins, violinist Leroy Jenkins and drummers Walter Perkins and Jerome Cooper — a virtual who’s who of Jazz: A Music of the Spirit.

Dwight West is a vocalist whose style evokes the warm baritone and romantic style of Johnny Hartman. This Tribute is a perfect way to celebrate Valentine’s Day and African American History Month.

On Saturday, January 25th, at 9 and 10:30 pm, we begin an early African American History Month Celebration with the Nat Adderley Jr. Quartet playing the music of the Adderley Family featuring saxophonist/flautist Mike Lee, bassist Chris Berger, drummer Alvester Garnett and the leader, pianist Nat Adderley Jr.

The Adderley name is an important one in the music because it’s synonymous with swing, funk, spirit and musical excellence. Nat Adderley Jr. keeps the torch burning, making his debut as a leader at our venue and playing some of the time-honored Jazz standards created by his family.

Reggie Woods, a regular in our roster of revolving artists, has put together a band of Sistas’ Place All-Stars who individually make sparks fly and who collectively light up the night. Make reservations and come early!
