Sistas’ Place, 456 Nostrand Avenue, at the corner of Jefferson Avenue, where Jazz: A Music of the Spirit Lives and Culture is our Weapon, is in its 24th year with the music of Resistance, Resilience and Resurgence. On Saturday, February 29th at 9 and 10:30 pm, we conclude our African American History Month celebrations with pianist Bad Alan Palmer and his trio which features bassist Ameen Salim and drummer Taru Alexander.

Alan Palmer, who has that adjective in front of his name because the great Jackie McLean thought it appropriate, performs on a date that only happens every four years. That is totally in keeping with the way he plays which is rare, beautiful and yet totally in keeping with some mystical reality. The musicians he has chosen are top shelf and are going to make this a night to remember.

On Saturday, February 22nd at 9 and 10:30 pm, we continue with our African American History Month celebrations with bassist Kenny Davis who will present a living Tribute to Jimmy Owens.

The musicians Kenny has chosen are trumpeters Jimmy Owens and Eddie Allen, pianist Luciano Minetti, drummer Jarrett Walter and of course, Mr. Davis on bass. This is a very important and beautiful idea of celebrating an artist who has done so much for the Jazz community and one who should be celebrated in the African American community while he is still on the planet!

On Tuesday, December 31st, Sistas’ Place swings in the New Year with Kenny “Swinging” Gates and the “Real Deal” Quartet featuring Joe Ford on Sax, Belvin Bullock on Bass, Rudy Walker on Drums, and Kenny “Swinging” Gates on Piano. Join us during this annual tradition of Song, Music, Food and All That Jazz!

On Saturday, May 25th at 9 and 10:30 pm, we close out this spectacular season with a Tribute to the great Hamiet Bluiett, featuring a band led by multi-percussionist Ronnie Burrage along with guitarist Kelvyn Bell, pianist Donald Smith, and two St. Louis musicians, bassist Darrel Mixon and saxophonist Kendrick Smith.

For 20 years, Bluiett was a consistent presence in the list of artists who annually performed at Sistas’ Place. The fact that he and so many like him lent their enormous talents and sound to our institution, was one of the reasons that we are now a Historic Landmark Institution. On this African Liberation Day weekend, we close out our season with a Tribute to this great tone scientist who meant so much to all who knew him. The brilliant Ronnie Burrage, whose mother asked Bluiett to take care of her son when he first came to New York, has been given the task of creating a band for this special occasion. He has chosen well in putting together greats like Donald Smith and Kevlyn Bell with St Louis musicians Kendrick Smith and Darrell Mixon, who will guarantee that the first of three Tributes to Bluiett, will be memorable. On Saturday, March 2, at 9 and 10: 30 pm, Grammy-Nominated Spoken Word Performance Artist Gh’ail Rhodes Benjamin with bassist Binky Brice present Brave Brown Sistas From The Front Lines, a collage of Spoken-Word Monologues and Music from the voices of Ella Baker, Winnie Mandela, Miriam Makeba, Ida B. Wells and Fannie Lou Hamer. We begin this series of concerts for Womens’ History Month with a dynamic presentation that will incorporate a glimpse of all the women being celebrated this month. On Saturday, February 23, 2019, at 9 and 10: 30 pm, saxophonist/composer and bandleader TK Blue will present another Tribute to the great Randy Weston with pianist Sharp Radway, bassist Alex Blake and drummer Vince Ector. The entire 2018-2019 season has been dedicated to Randy Weston in honor of the contributions he made to this Music of the Spirit and his support of what we have been doing for 23 years at Sistas’ Place. TK Blue has written an original suite for Baba Randy Weston that will be played in public for the first time on Saturday and which he will go into the studio the next day to record. This promises to be another historical event! Don’t Miss It!
