Sistas’ Place, 456 Nostrand Avenue, at the corner of Jefferson Avenue, where Jazz: A Music of the Spirit Lives and Culture is our Weapon, is in its 24th year with the music of Resistance, Resilience and Resurgence. On Saturday, February 15th at 9 and 10:30 pm, we continue with our African American History Month celebrations with vocalist Dwight West who will present a Valentine Tribute to the great Johnny Hartman. Dwight West’s group includes saxophonist Anthony Nelson, pianist Ava Nelson, bassist Calvin Jones, and drummer Joe Brown.

Johnny Hartman is a legendary vocalist who has the distinction of being the only vocalist John Coltrane chose to record with him on their classic 1963 collaboration. Born in Louisiana but raised in Chicago, Mr. Hartman was one of the many great musicians taught by Captain Walter Dyett at DuSable High School. Other notable musicians who attended Chicago’s DuSable and were students of Captain Dyett include vocalists Dinah Washington and Nat King Cole, saxophonists Gene Ammons, Johnny Griffin, John Gilmore, Red Holloway, Von Freeman, Joseph Jarman, and Eddie Harris, bassists Wilbur Ware, Richard Davis and Ronnie Boykins, violinist Leroy Jenkins and drummers Walter Perkins and Jerome Cooper — a virtual who’s who of Jazz: A Music of the Spirit.

Dwight West is a vocalist whose style evokes the warm baritone and romantic style of Johnny Hartman. This Tribute is a perfect way to celebrate Valentine’s Day and African American History Month.

On Saturday, September 25th, at 9 and 10:30 pm, we begin our 26th season with a Tribute to Hamiet Bluiett (Arrival Day 9/16) and John Coltrane (Arrival Day 9/23), with the James Carter Quartet featuring pianist James Hurt, bassist Hilliard Greene, drummer Kahlil Kwame Bell, and the leader James Carter on woodwinds.

This is a very special opening in that we will be paying tribute to Bluiett, a person who was instrumental in helping us achieve the success of our first 25 years in our effort to bring our music back to the community of Bedford Stuyvesant. And as well, we will be paying tribute to John Coltrane whose last effort on the planet was to bring our music back to the community of Harlem.

For this VSOP opening, we have chosen a leader who epitomizes the best qualities of both of those master musicians. The amazing James Carter, who was mentored by Bluiett and performs with the same uncompromising spirit as John Coltrane, will open this season at Sistas’ Place, for the first time, with his own band! On Saturday, September 24th our 2022-23 season begins with a very special presentation of an original composition Ode to Ohnedaruth, by composer/trombonist/bandleader Craig Harris, dedicated to John Coltrane. The top-notch group Brother Harris has assembled for this occasion includes saxophonist James Brandon Lewis, pianist Alex Marcello, bassist Jordyn Davis, and multi-percussionist Jerome Jennings. The title of the composition, Ohnedaruth, is the Sanskrit name meaning compassion, that John Coltrane adopted in the latter part of his life. Make reservations by calling (718) 398-1766 today!

On Saturday, September 30, 2017, at 9 and 10:30 pm, the Antonio Hart Quintet plays the music of John Coltrane featuring alto saxophonist Antonio Hart, trombonist Barry Cooper, pianist Miki Yamanaka, bassist Eric Wheeler and drummer Vince Ector.

On Saturday, September 23, 2017, at 9 and 10:30 pm, we kick off our fall season with Chico Freeman Equinox featuring pianist Anthony Wonsey, bassist Kenny Davis and drummer Jarret Walser in Tribute to John Coltrane.

For this year’s opening, the music of John Coltrane will be featured once again, this time on the Arrival day of the Master, with this amazing quartet led by one of the greats in this music, Chico Freeman. The band is called Equinox which is the time or date at which the sun crosses the celestial equator, when day and night are of equal length (about September 23rd).
