On Saturday, January 4th, 2020, we present Jazzical, featuring pianist/composer/bandleader Mark Adams, vibraphonist Derrick Barker, bassist Donald Nicks, and drummer George Gray. The Modern Jazz Quartet, one of the greatest and most enduring groups in this Music of the Spirit left a legacy of style, superb music, swing, African class and grace. Jazzical, which this writer heard a couple of months back, takes the MJQ approach into a 21st Century sound view and it is a compellingly different now thing they do!

On Saturday, May 26th, at 9 and 10:30, we continue our Sistas’ Place Jazz Festival with Brooklyn and Barbados’ own master pianist/composer/bandleader Ed Stoute who will lead an all-star band consisting of trumpeter Riley Mullins, saxophonist Gene Ghee, bassist Kim Clarke and drummer George Gray.

Ed Stoute is a Brooklyn legend. He has been a prominent fixture on the Brooklyn Jazz scene for the last 5 decades and is a Master of the Music of the Spirit. The band he has put together for this occasion is an incredible one. If you are looking for a way to celebrate the African Liberation Day/Memorial Day Week-End, you need not look any further!

On Saturday, May 7th, at 9 and 10:30 pm, we continue our Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival@Sistas’ Place with the Robert Rutledge/George Gray Ensemble featuring saxophonist Marquis Sayles, pianist Benito Gonzalez, bassist Alex Blake with trumpeter Robert Rutledge and multi-percussionist George Gray. The return of this project is a great thing for the music! This exciting collaboration between Mr. Rutledge and Mr. Gray has produced brilliant concerts in the past and this Saturday should be special because we will also be celebrating Robert Rutledge’s Arrival Day aka Birthday, (May 8)! Don’t miss this!

On Saturday, May 6th, 2017 at 9 and 10:30pm, trumpeter Robert Rutledge and drummer George Gray will feature the music of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers with saxophonist Roger Byam, pianist Yochi Uzeki, vibraphonist Bryan Carrott and bassist Alex Blake.

This coalition of Robert Rutledge and George Gray bodes well for the future of this music. It is a band that takes on the music of some of the great artists of this Music of the Spirit and makes it compelling, contemporary and lit! This Saturday, they have chosen to take on the music of the artists who contributed to the large repertoire of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. It is also a celebration of Robert Rutledge’s Arrival Day aka Birthday, so, be there, don’t be square!

We call this month-long series Brass Players at Sistas’ Place. The final brass players featured in this festival series is French hornist Vincent Chancey, next week.

Ed Stoute is a Brooklyn bred musician who is a master of the craft as a composer and pianist. The band he has put together for this performance is going to create an excitement that one has to witness.
