On Saturday, October 19th at 9 and 10:30pm, Ahmed Abdullah’s Diaspora Meet Francisco Mora Catlett’s AfroHORN with saxophonists Sam Newsome and Don Chapman; vocalist and poet Monique Ngozi Nri; pianist Aruan Ortiz; bassist RaDu ben Judah; percussionists Roman Diaz and Reggie Nicholson; multi-percussionist Francisco Mora Catlett; and trumpet, flugelhorn and vocals, Ahmed Abdullah.

Six months ago the bands of Diaspora (Dispersions of the Spirit of Ra) and AfroHORN went into the studio to document the historic pairing of the two groups. The result, Diaspora Meets AfroHORN, Music of the Spirit, Out of Sistas’ Place, will be presented this Saturday. The leaders of the combined ensembles, Ahmed Abdullah and Fransisco Mora Catlett are veterans of the Sun Ra Arkestra and what they have accomplished on this CD is a synergistic musical experience that can best be described as a “happening!”

On Saturday, April 27th, at 9 and 10:30 pm, the 20th Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival at Sistas’ Place continues with the unique combination of Ahmed Abdullah’s Diaspora meets AfroHORN with multi-percussionist Fransico Mora Catlett; saxophonists Sam Newsome and Don Chapman; Bob Stewart, tuba; Donald Smith on piano; Radu Ben Judah, bass; Ronnie Burrage, multi-percussion; Roman Diaz, percussion; poet/vocalist Monique Ngozi Nri; and Ahmed Abdullah, trumpet and vocals. This Festival worthy event affords an opportunity to hear two bands for the price of one. The bands Diaspora and AfroHORN both have musicians directing them who have been influenced by the great Sun Ra, the combination of the two bands reflects the fact that they have been working together over the last year in each other’s productions. Jackson; bassist RaDu ben Judah; poet/vocalist Monique Ngozi Nri, and African percussionist Roman Diaz, with the leaders on trumpet, flugelhorn, voice, and multiple percussion, respectively.

Jackson, African percussionist Roman Diaz, multi-percussionist Francisco Mora Catlett, poet/vocalist Monique Ngozi Nri and Ahmed Abdullah on trumpet, flugelhorn, and vocals.

This project was recorded in 2019 to celebrate the music of Sun Ra and two bands outside of his Arkestra, led by musicians mentored by him.

On Saturday, February 3rd, at 9 and 10:30 pm, Fransico Mora Catlett and Afro Horn begin our African American History Month Celebration with a Tribute to the legendary Henry Dumas. The group also features poet Meredith Wright, saxophonist Marquis Sayles, trumpeter Brian Mackenzie, pianist Alan Palmer, bassist Rashaan Carter, African percussionist Roman Diaz and multi-percussionist Fransico Mora Catlett.

Fransico Mora Catlett, in evoking the spirit of Henry Dumas, at this time in our culture, is precisely what we need to be surrounded with because Henry Dumas represents the deeper aspect of our culture that is so lacking and so needed. Henry Dumas studied with Sun Ra, one of the progenitors of this Music of the Spirit. Henry Dumas was rooted in African culture and understood that our culture is a source of Liberation most especially if we approach it from a higher level than the backward folks who think they are in power. Henry Dumas is an artist we need to study today!
