On Saturday, April 2nd, at 9 and 10:30 pm, we begin our Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival@Sistas’ Place with Person2Person! This recently recorded project features woodwinds players Houston Person and Eric Person in the frontline with pianist Victor Gould, bassist Kenny Davis, and drummer Vince Ector. The approach of this band is both unique and significant as it is cross-generational. Houston Person, the master saxophonist, performs with the young master saxophonist Eric Person. Their latest recording Blue Vision was recently reviewed in the New York City Jazz Record (scroll to page 14). Don’t Miss This!

Blue, Alex Blake, Sharp Radway, and Baba Neil Clarke. The maestro’s Arrival Day is April 6th and we want to honor him in his community of Bedford Stuyvesant. Need we say more?

On Saturday, April 30th, International Jazz Day, at 9 and 10:30 pm, we continue our Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival@Sistas’ Place with the J.D. Allen/Brandon Sanders Quartet featuring pianist Anthony Wonsey, bassist Steve Kirby aka Obasi Akoto, and the leaders on saxophone and multi-percussion, respectively. J.D. Allen is a young master and he is a musician who is interested in moving his community forward. Brandon Sanders is a young master and he is also interested in moving his community forward. This is going to be an event that you will need to make reservations for, well in advance!

On Saturday, May 14th, at 9 and 10:30 pm, we continue our Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival@Sistas’ Place with the Andrew Lamb Trio featuring bassist Hill Greene, multi-percussionist Newman Taylor Baker and the leader on saxophone. It has been many years since this completely original saxophonist graced the stage of Sistas’ Place with his presence. He has returned with a dynamic Trio that is sure to sound like a big band. On Saturday, May 28th, African Liberation Weekend, at 9 and 10:30 pm, we continue our Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival@Sistas’ Place with the Jerome Jennings Quartet featuring trumpeter Wallace Roney Jr, saxophonist Lance Bryant, bassist Liany Mateo and the leader on multi-percussion. Drummer, composer, educator, and bandleader Jerome Jennings is rooted in the culture of African people and as such he is the perfect person to be on our stage for this significant weekend. The group he has assembled for this occasion includes some fantastic talent!

On Saturday, June 4th, for the last performance of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival@Sistas’ Place, we present the Hank Bolden Trio featuring the leader on tenor saxophone, Organ Monk aka Greg Lewis on Hammond B-3 Organ and multi-percussionist Joe Blaxx.

Hank Bolden aka the Atomic Veteran, 85 years on this planet, just graduated from The Hart School, the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz created by one of the progenitors of Jazz: A Music of the Spirit! Hank Bolden, has a phenomenal story to tell on his instrument and verbally. This brother was the subject of experimentation post World War ll, when the government of this country, which obviously has little regard for African people, decided to see how Africans could withstand the radiation fallout from nuclear weapons, and therefore put him in a company of other African soldiers to monitor their reaction to atomic radiation. This brother and one other are the only ones who survived this cruel experimentation! After decades of hiding this information, finally in the 1990s during the Clinton Administration, the abuse of these soldiers was made public. However, it took another generation for this brother, Hank Bolden, to receive reparations for the inhumane treatment he received. When he received his paltry payment, a few years back, he decided to do two things, one was to buy a house for his family and the other was to go back to school and earn the degree he was entitled to!

This performance will close out our season with the heightened need for Reparations for African people and a celebration of Brother Hank Bolden, who received a partial payment! Don’t miss this!!! Call for Reservations at (718) 398-1766!

Malcolm X, the revolutionary leader who was assassinated on February 21st 1965, left a legacy of speeches that are totally relevant to the reality we are facing today. Rachiim Ausar Sahu has organized a 20 piece big band complete with vocalists to resurrect the spirit of Malcolm.

For the last two years this project has been presented at Sistas’ Place, however, the serious challenge we are facing politically, socially and spiritually, demands the exposure of this project to a larger venue and audience.

Jazz: A Music of the Spirit is always about the intention of the composer and Rachiim Ausar Sahu is clear about his:
There are two female solo voices, each reflective of different avenues towards the stated ‘Malcolm effect’. In my studies I found that in the Sufi religious tradition, the human voice is categorized by effect and not range. I chose to engage that sense of sound and have scored my solo voices accordingly. There is the Jemal voice or voice of beauty. There is the Kemal voice or voice of wisdom. Thirdly there is the Jelal voice or voice of power.
