Sistas’ Place, 456 Nostrand Avenue, at the corner of Jefferson and Frederick Douglass Square, where Jazz: A Music of the Spirit Lives and Culture is our Weapon, is in the summer break of its 26th year with the music of Resistance, Resilience, and Resurgence. Sistas’ Place is a Historic Landmark Institution!

On Saturday, August 20th we present the Reggie Woods Band featuring Reggie Woods (Bandleader & Sax), Anthony Wonsey (Piano), Jason Patterson (Drums), Jerry Brooks (Bass), Steve Horton (Guitar), Gil Defay (Trumpet), Latrice Cherry (Vocals), Shakim (Vocals), RJ Woods (Vocals), and Drew Woods (Rapper). There are two sets at 9 and 10:30 pm, admission is $25 per show with reservations. Call (718) 398-1766 to make reservations.

Malcolm X, the revolutionary leader who was assassinated on February 21st 1965, left a legacy of speeches that are totally relevant to the reality we are facing today. Rachiim Ausar Sahu has organized a 20 piece big band complete with vocalists to resurrect the spirit of Malcolm.

For the last two years this project has been presented at Sistas’ Place, however, the serious challenge we are facing politically, socially and spiritually, demands the exposure of this project to a larger venue and audience.

Jazz: A Music of the Spirit is always about the intention of the composer and Rachiim Ausar Sahu is clear about his:
There are two female solo voices, each reflective of different avenues towards the stated ‘Malcolm effect’. In my studies I found that in the Sufi religious tradition, the human voice is categorized by effect and not range. I chose to engage that sense of sound and have scored my solo voices accordingly. There is the Jemal voice or voice of beauty. There is the Kemal voice or voice of wisdom. Thirdly there is the Jelal voice or voice of power.

On Friday, April 8, 2016 Jazz 966, joined by Sistas’ Place, the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium and Up Over Jazz Productions, are throwing an All Star Musical Birthday Tribute to Brooklyn’s own NEA Jazz Master Randy Weston. Randy’s contributions in music and culture span the African Diaspora from Bed-Stuy to Africa to travelling around the world showcasing African Rhythms.

Joining in to pay tribute so far are Kenny Barron, Donald Smith, Sonny Fortune, Jimmy Owens, Winard Harper and Robin Kelley. Very limited seating available; tickets are $30 in advance and $40 at the door. Call to purchase tickets (718) 398-1766.

Join us at Sistas’ Place this Sat., June 13, 2026, featuring the Lafayette Harris/Mejedi Owusu Band featuring pianist Lafayette Harris,  trumpeter Mejedi Owusu, saxophonist Matt Garcia, bassist Lonnie Plaxico and multi-percussionist David Hawkins.

This is the last concert in the month-long series celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Wildflower Series at Studio RivBea.
