Sistas’ Place, 456 Nostrand Avenue, at the corner of Jefferson Avenue, where Jazz: A Music of the Spirit Lives and Culture is our Weapon, is in its 24th year with the music of Resistance, Resilience and Resurgence. On Saturday, March 7th, at 9 and 10:30 pm, we begin our series celebrating Phenomenal African Sistas’ with cellist/vocalist/bandleader Akua Dixon and guitarist Freddie Bryant, bassist Calvin Jones, and drummer Damon Duewhite.

It’s been a while since Akua Dixon has graced our stage but she returns leading a series that she was destined for. The Phenomenal African Sistas’ series is one in which we honor the great women who are either our ancestors or who are presently living among us. As a composer, cellist, vocalist and bandleader, Akua Dixon is the perfect choice.

On Saturday, February 15th at 9 and 10:30 pm, we continue with our African American History Month celebrations with vocalist Dwight West who will present a Valentine Tribute to the great Johnny Hartman. Dwight West’s group includes saxophonist Anthony Nelson, pianist Ava Nelson, bassist Calvin Jones, and drummer Joe Brown.

Johnny Hartman is a legendary vocalist who has the distinction of being the only vocalist John Coltrane chose to record with him on their classic 1963 collaboration. Born in Louisiana but raised in Chicago, Mr. Hartman was one of the many great musicians taught by Captain Walter Dyett at DuSable High School. Other notable musicians who attended Chicago’s DuSable and were students of Captain Dyett include vocalists Dinah Washington and Nat King Cole, saxophonists Gene Ammons, Johnny Griffin, John Gilmore, Red Holloway, Von Freeman, Joseph Jarman, and Eddie Harris, bassists Wilbur Ware, Richard Davis and Ronnie Boykins, violinist Leroy Jenkins and drummers Walter Perkins and Jerome Cooper — a virtual who’s who of Jazz: A Music of the Spirit.

Dwight West is a vocalist whose style evokes the warm baritone and romantic style of Johnny Hartman. This Tribute is a perfect way to celebrate Valentine’s Day and African American History Month.

Join us at for a fantastic LIVE JAZZ performance featuring trombonist/composer/bandleader CRAIG HARRIS and his “Tailgaters Tales” Quintet featuring Craig Harris (Trombone), Jay Rodriguez (Saxophone), Yoichi Uzeki (Piano), Calvin Jones (Bass), and Jerome Jennings (Drums). They meld intricate composition driven by imaginative improvisation.

Tailgaters Tales is a vehicle focusing on the Trombone where concept, composition and improvisation intersect in the gray area and become one. This is Craig’s core group and an outlet for him as an improviser and composer to stretch out and tell musical stories from a trombone place.

“I want every voice heard. I want to touch on tradition but keep the sounds in constant transition. That way I can give the improvisers room enough to tell their own personal stories.”
