On Saturday, April 6th, at 9 and 10:30 pm, Chief Neil Clarke’s Trio Plus, with vibraphonist Bryan Carrott, bassist Alex Blake and Khuent Rose playing steel pan performs African Rhythms Moods & Methods, in Tribute to Dr. Randy Weston on his 93rd Arrival Day. As has been stated, Baba Randy Weston was a true friend of Sistas’ Place. With Neil Clarke leading this ensemble we have another opportunity to honor his memory and contribution. Don’t Miss This!

On Saturday, May 13th, 2017, at 9 and 10:30pm, French hornist, composer/educator Vincent Chancey with an all-star group that includes pianist Bertha Hope, vibraphonist Bryan Carrott, bassist Hill Greene and drummer Newman Taylor Baker, will perform.

This group performed last year and the music was as great as it should be with a stellar band of this caliber. It is bound to be even better this year. This is the last installment of the Brass Fantasy Festival at Sistas Place, so please don’t miss it!

On Saturday, April 8, 2017, at 9 and 10:30pm, we present a tribute to the master Mongo Santamaria organized by the quintessential percussionist, Neil Clarke. His dynamic band includes trumpeter Eddie Allen, saxophonist Cleave Guyton, bassist, Donald Nicks and vibraphonist Bryan Carrott. Neil has played with all the greats including Harry Belafonte, Miriam Makeba, Randy Weston and fellow African Rhythms sidemen, Alex Blake, TK Blue and the late Benny Powell.

We continue our own eclectic festival for National Jazz and Poetry Month with another very special group featuring the music of the great Mongo Santamaria led by one of Brooklyn’s best, Baba Neil Clarke. April 7th marks the centenary of Mongo Santamaria’s arrival on this planet. He was known for developing an African Cuban sound within this music. One of his first hits was Watermelon Man by Herbie Hancock. His contribution was establishing a sustained connection between the Africans on this continent and the Africans in the Diaspora. We therefore celebrate his legacy.

On Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 9 and 10:30pm, we present alto saxophonist Eric Person and vibraphonist Bryan Carrott in a Tribute to the Music of Jackie McLean and Bobby Hutcherson with bassist Belden Bullock and drummer McClenty Hunter.

April is National Jazz Appreciation and Poetry Month. In keeping with that, Sistas’ Place begins its own Jazz Festival which will combine with the Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival on April 15th. To open our Festival we have a very special group featuring the music of Jackie McLean, one of the progenitors of the Jazz: A Music of the Spirit and the music of Bobby Hutcherson, one of the great vibraphonist of this music. The group, co-led by Eric Person and Bryan Carrot, two brilliant musicians, promises to result in an extraordinary night.

This event is in memory of our Sista Viola and honoring our Brother Ahned Abdullah for the jazz institution they led in building for a quarter century. This event is at Bed-Stuy Restoration Corp. and is $35; cash preferred.

MC Ahmed Abdullah hosts an amazing list of jazz musicians including Reggie Woods, T.K.
