On Saturday, March 7th, at 9 and 10:30 pm, we begin our series celebrating Phenomenal African Sistas’ with cellist/vocalist/bandleader Akua Dixon and guitarist Freddie Bryant, bassist Calvin Jones, and drummer Damon Duewhite.

It’s been a while since Akua Dixon has graced our stage but she returns leading a series that she was destined for. The Phenomenal African Sistas’ series is one in which we honor the great women who are either our ancestors or who are presently living among us. As a composer, cellist, vocalist and bandleader, Akua Dixon is the perfect choice.

On Saturday, February 22nd at 9 and 10:30 pm, we continue with our African American History Month celebrations with bassist Kenny Davis who will present a living Tribute to Jimmy Owens.

The musicians Kenny has chosen are trumpeters Jimmy Owens and Eddie Allen, pianist Luciano Minetti, drummer Jarrett Walter and of course, Mr. Davis on bass. This is a very important and beautiful idea of celebrating an artist who has done so much for the Jazz community and one who should be celebrated in the African American community while he is still on the planet!

Saxophonist Carl Bartlett Jr. comes out of a family of excellent musicians as is witnessed by his uncle Charles as his bandmate. On Saturday, November 23rd at 9 and 10:30 pm, Brooklyn’s own Charenee Wade and her trio featuring pianist Jon Chin, bassist Paul Baudry and drummer Lucianna Padmore, perform.

Ms. Wade is a fantastic vocalist whose performance last year at Sistas’ Place was nothing short of amazing. In her delivery, one can hear the earlier influences of greats like Sarah Vaughn and Betty Carter in her work but mostly one hears Charenee Wade.

On Saturday, October 19th at 9 and 10:30pm, Ahmed Abdullah’s Diaspora Meet Francisco Mora Catlett’s AfroHORN with saxophonists Sam Newsome and Don Chapman; vocalist and poet Monique Ngozi Nri; pianist Aruan Ortiz; bassist RaDu ben Judah; percussionists Roman Diaz and Reggie Nicholson; multi-percussionist Francisco Mora Catlett; and trumpet, flugelhorn and vocals, Ahmed Abdullah.

Six months ago the bands of Diaspora (Dispersions of the Spirit of Ra) and AfroHORN went into the studio to document the historic pairing of the two groups. The result, Diaspora Meets AfroHORN, Music of the Spirit, Out of Sistas’ Place, will be presented this Saturday. The leaders of the combined ensembles, Ahmed Abdullah and Fransisco Mora Catlett are veterans of the Sun Ra Arkestra and what they have accomplished on this CD is a synergistic musical experience that can best be described as a “happening!”
