Sistas’ Place, 456 Nostrand Avenue, at the corner of Jefferson Avenue, where Jazz: A Music of the Spirit Lives and Culture is our Weapon, continues its 23rd season with the music of Resistance, Resilience and Resurgence.
On Saturday, January 26, 2019, at 9 and 10: 30 pm, trombonist/composer Dick Griffin will pay Tribute to one of his mentors, the great Rahsaan Roland Kirk. The band will include organist Matthew Smyth, drummer George Gray and the leader on trombone. Rahsaan Roland Kirk, who was born August 8, 1935, and left the planet December 5, 1977, was one of the more remarkable musicians to have ever lived. He was a multi-instrumentalist playing flute, tenor saxophone, strich, and manzello, to name just a few. Sometimes he played multiple instruments at the same time and he was also a composer. Dick Griffin, an accomplished musician in his own right, worked with Mr. Kirk from the late 60s until the mid-70s. Dick Griffin has mastered the art of circular breathing and has developed the use of multi phonics in his playing. Mr. Griffin is also a visual artist. Don’t miss this!
