Sistas’ Place, 456 Nostrand Avenue, at the corner of Jefferson Avenue, where Jazz: A Music of the Spirit Lives and Culture is our Weapon, continues its 23rd season with the music of Resistance, Resilience and Resurgence.

On Saturday, May 25th at 9 and 10:30 pm, we close out this spectacular season with a Tribute to the great Hamiet Bluiett, featuring a band led by multi-percussionist Ronnie Burrage along with guitarist Kelvyn Bell, pianist Donald Smith, and two St. Louis musicians, bassist Darrel Mixon and saxophonist Kendrick Smith.

For 20 years, Bluiett was a consistent presence in the list of artists who annually performed at Sistas’ Place. The fact that he and so many like him lent their enormous talents and sound to our institution, was one of the reasons that we are now a Historic Landmark Institution. On this African Liberation Day weekend, we close out our season with a Tribute to this great tone scientist who meant so much to all who knew him. The brilliant Ronnie Burrage, whose mother asked Bluiett to take care of her son when he first came to New York, has been given the task of creating a band for this special occasion. He has chosen well in putting together greats like Donald Smith and Kevlyn Bell with St Louis musicians Kendrick Smith and Darrell Mixon, who will guarantee that the first of three Tributes to Bluiett, will be memorable. The right to defend your people and your community is a human right that no race gives or takes away from another.

This Black History Month we pay tribute to those Black Men who stood up in armed defense of the civil rights movement, and in so doing and unbeknownst to many, raised our liberation movement to the international level of human rights.

The film, Deacons for Defense, tells a small part of this true story. A message of courage and fearlessness that was consciously hidden from the central story line of the civil rights movement. A very serious attempt to paint our struggle into a box of non-violence, white paternalism and U.S. government protection.

However, recent books like, We Will Shoot Back: Armed Resistance in the Mississippi Freedom Movement written by Prof. Akinyele Omowale Umoja, and the story of one of the Deacons, Robert Hicks (see below), from Bogalusa, La., has pulled back the covers on some of these courageous Brothers and the movement that supported their efforts.

On Saturday, May 11, 2024, Sistas’ Place shows the award-winning film about Max Roach The Drum Also Waltzes. Max Roach’s far-reaching ambitions were inspired and challenged by the inequities of the society around him. His political consciousness, expressed in his groundbreaking Freedom Suite and other works, made him a fierce advocate for change at a time when the nation was viciously steeped in racism.
