On Saturday, February 12, 2022, at 9 and 10:30 pm, we present the second of a dynamic series of performances to celebrate African American History Month! Multi-percussionist Willie Jones the III pays Tribute to the great multi-percussionist, Billy Higgins. In addition to the leader on drums, the group also includes tenor saxophonist Chris Lewis, bassist Barry Stephenson, and pianist Keith Brown.
The great Billy Higgins who arrived on the planet the same day as the great Art Blakey, October 11th, is one of the unheralded geniuses of this Music of the Spirit. Billy Higgins played on as many as 700 recordings and performed with greats such as Ornette Coleman, Donald Byrd, Dexter Gordon, Grant Green, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Don Cherry, Jackie McLean, Thelonius Monk, Lee Morgan, Sonny Rollins, Cedar Walton, David Murray, and Sun Ra, just to name a few.
Willie Jones the III continues in his mentor’s footsteps and has played drums with a number of his generation’s greats including Roy Hargrove and Wynton Marsalis. The band he has put together for this Tribute includes some phenomenal musicians. Don’t miss this!!!
