Sistas’ Place, 456 Nostrand Avenue, at the corner of Jefferson Avenue, where Jazz: A Music of the Spirit Lives and Culture is our Weapon, closes out it’s 20th Historic Landmark Season. As usual our last show of the season celebrates African Liberation Day. This year we are fortunate enough to close out with a celebration of one of the progenitors of Jazz: A Music of the Spirit, Jackie McLean, whose son saxophonist/composer/bandleader/educator Rene McLean, will do the honors with a magnificently powerful band that includes trumpeter Lesedi Ntsane, pianist Alan J. Palmer, bassist Aaron James, drummer Ronnie Burrage and percussionist Baba Neal Clarke.
Jackie McLean has been designated one of the progenitors of our music because of his illustrious contribution to the music as one of the great alto saxophonists, composers, educators and bandleaders and because of the decision he made to build an institution (along with his wife Dolly McLean), the Artist Collective in Hartford Connecticut. This is an institution, like Sistas’ Place, that projects, protects and develops the music of the African Diaspora and Rene McLean continues in the grand tradition of his father!
